Spanish Hot Chocolate
As featured on the BBC and reviewed in The List Magazine
" As a change from boring old chocolates why not make your loved one a
silky smooth hot chocolate in the Spanish style, mixing a little
cornflour into hot milk and then dropping in a handful of these
wonderfully rich, deep flavoured choc drops. No sugar, no powders.
5 stars"
If you look at the About Us page you will see that this was one of our inspirations for starting the business. Follow this simple recipe and you will be hooked. The Spanish have churros with the hot chocolate and it is traditionally a breakfast meal.
Churros are best likened to doughnuts except they are long, thin, strips, deep fried and covered in sugar. They are dunked into the chocolate which you will notice is a lot thicker than the norm here in the UK. Don't bother about tradition though - too time consuming, just get yourself some doughnuts, dunk and enjoy.
By the way, the mini buttons are yummy on their own. These Sao Thome ones from the African island of the same name are a powerful single origin dark chocolate. Beware though! once you start eating them on their own you may never actually get around to making the hot chocolate. The BBC featured our Spanish Hot Chocolate on their De a Nis programme in 2008.
Traditional Spanish Hot Chocolate Recipe - enough for 2 mugs
500ml milk.
60g callets.
A little water.
2-4 teaspoons cornflour
(4 teaspoons gives a really thick drink).
Dissolve the cornflour in a little water, add everything into a pan and bring gently to a boil whisking regularly. Simmer for a few minutes and keep whisking. Pour into 2 mugs, sink into your favourite chair and time will stand still!
Low fat option - only have 1 doughnut.
Best to sip from a spoon like the Spanish do as this is a very hot (muy caliente!) drink and we don't want any burnt lips do we? We don't add any sugar but you can if you want - not too much though eh!
Callets shipped in 400g bags.
